Vaccination for Tanzania & Zanzibar

HEALTH & VACCINATION GUIDELINES

(For Travelers with Safari Zyvora Tours)

Yellow Fever

  • Required: A valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate is required for travelers arriving from or transiting through countries where yellow fever is present. This applies to many African and South American countries. Always check the latest entry requirements before travel.

  • Recommended for All Travelers: Even if you are not coming from a yellow-fever-endemic country, it is generally advised that all travelers 9 months of age and older receive the vaccine when visiting Tanzania.

Routine Vaccinations

Before traveling, ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date, including:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis

  • Varicella (Chickenpox)

  • Polio

  • Seasonal Influenza

Hepatitis A & Hepatitis B

  • Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers due to the possibility of food and water contamination.

  • Hepatitis B: Recommended especially for travelers who may have close contact with local communities, need medical care, or engage in outdoor activities for extended periods.

Typhoid

  • Recommended: Particularly if you plan to spend time in rural areas, try local food spots, or visit regions with limited sanitation infrastructure.

Meningococcal Meningitis

  • Recommended: During the dry season (June–October) and for travelers visiting densely populated areas or regions prone to outbreaks.

Rabies

  • Consider: If your trip involves close contact with animals, such as wildlife activities, volunteering, research, or spending time in rural villages where dogs or other animals roam freely.

Cholera

  • Precautions: Cholera can occur in some regions. It is advised to practice strict food and water hygiene. Vaccination may be recommended for travelers visiting high-risk or outbreak areas.

Malaria

  • Antimalarial Medication: Malaria exists throughout Tanzania and Zanzibar.
    Take prescribed antimalarial medication, and practice prevention measures such as:

    • Using mosquito repellent

    • Sleeping under treated mosquito nets

    • Wearing long sleeves and pants in the evening

COVID-19

  • Current Requirements: Follow updated COVID-19 guidelines, including any vaccination, testing, or entry requirements at the time of travel.

Pre-Travel Consultation

  • Visit a travel health clinic or your healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before travel to discuss:

    • Your health condition

    • Customized vaccination plan

    • Malaria prevention options

    • Any special considerations for Zanzibar or mainland safari destinations
